XCALAK TRIP
COBA TRIP
TULUM TRIP

The road out of town is good. Not much traffic. Wide and not many pot holes. Our first stop will be the military check point at the entrance to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve. You pass through the arches and pay a small fee (I think it was 20 pesos.). Sign the guest book and you are on your way. No problem with the military. Time for a cerveza.

ROAD TRIP TO PUNTA ALLEN

Our first priority is to stock up on plenty of cold cerevzas and enough ice to keep them that way during the 2 1/2 to 4 hour trip down the Boca Paila Road. Our journey starts out in Tulum and ends up at the end of the road (literaly) in Punta Allen. Our mission is to bring back enough lobster to last us through dinner and tomorrow's breakfast. We will be having lobster lunch once there. Plenty of gas, spare tire, a jack that works, and we are ready to go.

The Trip Begins
Road out of town
The Boca Paila Bridge
Not your typical bridge. It can be scary, but if you look at the size of those timbers, you will know it is almost safe.
The road narrows
View from the air.
Haven't seen much wildlife. Lots of birds and a few snakes. Termite mounds are abundant. I've heard I might see the giant ants but none so far. Saw a few monkeys in Boca Paila but none here.
Stopped at a few beaches. Beautiful. No one around for miles. Lots of turtle tracks. Found a nice little blow hole.
It doesn't take long after entering the Sian Ka'an Biosphere reserve for the road conditions to change. The trip is 45 kilometers (28 miles). The destinct feeling that you are not in Kansas anymore keeps with you as you look around. You have to maneuver around all the pot holes and try to make room for the occasional but rare, other vehicle. The jungle closes in as you get slapped in the face with a low hanging frond. It's July and the temperature is in the 90's. The humidity from the jungle makes it feel much hotter. Time for another cerveza.
Once in the Sian Ka'an Biosphere reserve, it doesn't take long for road conditions to change. It's about a 45 kilometer trip (28miles) but with maneuvering over pot holes and trying to make room for the rare on coming traffic, it can take a while. The temperature is 85 degrees But seems a lot hotter. You can feel the humidity from the jungle.

Finally arrive and have lunch. Now this is a nice open air restaurant. The food was great. I came for lobster and that is what I had. The lobster processing plant is a blue building about 300 meters behind the restaurant. You order lobster and tell the waiter what size you would like. He runs to the plant and brings them back to get your approval. If you agree that they are the right size, they are put on the grill. If not, he runs back and gets more. A couple cold cerevezas and a huge lobster lunch. It doesn't get much better. One last thing to do before heading back. We still have to buy lobster to go. At $20 dollars US a kilo, you can't go wrong.

Pristine beaches along the coast. You have to take time out and explore a couple of them. Not good for shell collecting but great for swimming. The surf and undercurrents can be dangerous. Use good judgement.
I had to pose for a picture
Punta Allen Lighthouse

This is the end of the road. Can't go any farther. Look at a map. The only thing to do is turn around. There was no one around and the lighthouse was locked. Hammocks are hung in the white building but still couldn't find someone to let us in. It is about 2:00pm now, so time to head back. Need to get back to Tulum for lobster dinner.

We arrived back from Punt Allen in good time. It took 1 1/2 hours to drive back. I knew what to expect on the way back and wasn't worried. The girls were a little upset from me hitting a few extra pot holes. I guess their boobs were sore.

We are staying at the Piedra Escondido in Tulum. Dropped off the lobsters to the cook at the restaurant to be served with dinner and settled back in the bar for a cold cerveza and talk about the day's adventures. The sky was getting dark and it was starting to rain. All of a sudden, this funnel cloud appeared and came in from the ocean. Everyone ran out of the bar. The cloud pased right above us. I thought it was a tornado coming to take me back to Kansas. I found out later that it was just a vertigas. Very common in Quintana Roo. It was a very interesting day.

Some of my pictures were lost due to a severing of relationships and an irate girlfriend. A few pictures were borrowed to replace lost ones. Credits for the borrowed photos will be posted when I find them.
